Boulo is recruiting a Non-Profit Development and Communications Director for our client, a Birmingham-based non-profit with a mission to inspire imaginative learning in adolescents and cultivate technique and artistry as they mature. 

Employment Type: Full-Time
Flexibility: Flexible culture, open to Part-Time
Salary: $50,000 - $60,000
Benefits: 5 weeks PTO beginning after 90 days (Thanksgiving week, December break 2 weeks, March spring break, Independence Day week); flex time for additional PTO; participation in TIAA 403(b) retirement program, with match based on tenure

The Development and Communications Director is a critical new role in a dynamic and inclusive organization, celebrating the arts as a transformative experience for all both in their studio and throughout the community. This position will be a member of the leadership team and report directly to the Executive Director. The candidate will be expected to galvanize fundraising and development efforts to move the organization forward with initiative, care, and innovation as they are now in a property design planning phase, leading to their 50th anniversary in 2025 and a capital campaign.  

Responsibilities of the Development and Communications Director: 
  • Strategically develop and implement a comprehensive development plan with systems, goals and timelines in partnership with the leadership team and board.
  • Serve as staff leader to actively engage the board and other volunteers in fundraising efforts, providing structure, research, and guidance.  
  • Lead and manage day-to-day development operations, finding modes of efficiencies and synergy with systems and processes for excellent donor stewardship, record keeping and gift acknowledgment, income and expense management, internal and external reporting.  
  • Critically develop and execute comprehensive communications to support development efforts, and serve as spokesperson, ensuring a positive integration of marketing and development plans.
  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward individuals to secure and increase financial support.
  • Develop major gift strategies and build a pipeline for future major gifts.
  • Research, develop, and submit proposals and applications for all funding opportunities including grants, sponsorships, corporate support, cause marketing, and special events.
  • Cultivate and maintain partnerships in the community to strengthen community knowledge, expand resources, and make new connections for potential collaborations.
  • Collaborate and communicate with coworkers for fluid and effective operations.
  • Develop and execute all fundraising activities and events, with support.
  • Collaborate with and coordinate established volunteer committee which produces an annual fundraising event each March.

Requirements of the Development and Communications Director:
  • Bachelor's degree in nonprofit management, marketing, communications, business, or relevant field
  • 5+ years writing and administering grants with proven track record.  
  • 5+ years successfully cultivating and securing individual, corporate, and foundation support.
  • 3+ years in a leadership position in development, with proven experience with special events and activities, annual funds, targeted appeals, grant writing and reporting, cause marketing, face-to-face gift solicitations, major gift securement,  sponsorships; experience with capital campaigns a plus; experience with arts organizations a plus.
  • Experience designing and implementing communication campaigns, with the ability to present the organization's stories in a compelling manner verbally and in writing.
  • Excellent attention to detail, strong organization skills, and project management.  
  • Proven track record of achieving revenue targets and performance metrics.
  • Ability to creatively problem-solve and manage multiple projects in a dynamic work environment  
  • Proven analytical skills translating data into impactful content.  
  • Experience working closely with a volunteer board and effectively developing and leading administrative staff and volunteers.
  • Ability to build and sustain authentic relationships and rapport with coworkers and diverse constituencies with integrity, warmth, and humor.  
  • Ability to meet in person with stakeholders and collaborators in a variety of locations
  • Ability to work and meet outside standard work hours as needed.
