Location:

Western Health, situated on the scenic west coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, is seeking the services of a salaried Psychiatrist for Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital, Stephenville, Newfoundland. Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital is a 44-bed acute care hospital offering 24-hour emergency room service and predominantly General Surgery lists, although surgical services are being expanded. Procedural Chronic Pain clinics are run weekly. The hospital is located approximately one hour's drive away from Corner Brook. Western Memorial Regional Hospital is a 171 bed regional referral center for Western Newfoundland and provides services to a population base of approximately 78,000 people. They are affiliated with Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador Medical School and they encourage and support academic interests.

 

Scope of Practice:

The  position  requires  working  within  an interprofessional  practice  model,  in  inpatient  and  outpatient settings. The physician will be required to conduct ElectroConvulsive Therapy  (ECT) treatments. Services  are regionally  organized  and clinical  duties vary according  to the roles  assigned  to each team member. Given  the regional  nature of services  being  offered,  all psychiatrists  in the  region are expected  to offer services to new and recheck patients by a blend of office-based, outreach and telehealth  clinics. Inpatient duties are half days, responsible for 6-7 patients.

Outpatient Clinics:  All practices are open with a minimum of 10% of direct clinic patient care being to new patients.  On average, a new patient will be seen every third clinic.   The number of new patients seen will be compared  to the number  of available  clinics quarterly. Physicians may be attached to the ACT Team, Case Management (by area)  and Early Psychosis. Outpatient clinics are 90 minutes for new patients and 30 minutes for existing patient follow up. A physician would expect to see 3-6 patients per half day clinic. The physician would  be able to choose their preferred work setting and patient mix. 

 

Remuneration:

  • Remuneration will be in accordance with the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association (NLMA) and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador dated May 3, 2022.
  • The Specialist Salary Scale is Step 1 - $263,672 to Step 3 - $285,596. The salary step is determined by the Department of Health based on a physician’s years of clinical experience, noting that residency and fellowship training does not count towards years of clinical experience for this purpose.
  • On-call benefits paid in accordance with DOH guidelines. On-call coverage provided after the 1 in 3 monthly obligation is eligible to be paid $43.55 per hour and is administered by Eastern Health. Additionally physicians bill MCP $12.08 per hour for each hour they are scheduled on-call.
  • For the first three months of your employment, physicians can be provided accommodations free of charge upon request. A damage deposit is required.
  • Standard utilities are included with the exception of personal long distance telephone calls which will be the physician’s responsibility. The physician is expected to vacate the accommodation during this 3 month timeframe. Upon completion of 12 months of service, the physician is eligible for a one-time payment of $3,750 toward housing costs.
  • Incumbents will receive annually 20 days of vacation plus leave for workshops and other training.
 

Education and experience:

  • Medical Degree with specialist training in Psychiatry.

  • Royal College of Canada certification or eligibility 

  • MCCQE1 exam OR a complete set of USMLE’s

  • OR currently holds a FULL license to practice in another Canadian province.

  • Eligible for registration and licensure as a psychiatrist with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Newfoundland and Labrador

  • Or your training and certification is from an approved jurisdiction. Approved jurisdictions: Australia, United Kingdom, United States, New Zealand, Ireland, South Africa, Singapore, Hong Kong and Switzerland.

Skills required: Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, laboratory staff and medical professionals are essential.
