General Practitioner/ Oncology Support (BH-363)

The Saint John, NB area is actively seeking GP Oncology Support physicians. As a General Practitioner, the successful candidate will deliver inpatient services to cancer patients within a regional interdisciplinary team setting. The General Practitioner will collaborate with the Medical Oncologists, Radiation Oncologists, and Hematologists, for service delivery in the oncology inpatient clinic. The General Practitioner will be responsible to the Department Head of Oncology for professional matters and scope of practice.

JOB DUTIES:

These responsibilities are basic. Additional duties may be assigned from time to time as may be necessary:

  • Provide care to patients receiving chemotherapy and other treatments and troubleshoot with inpatients admitted with complications from the new diagnosis and treatment.

  • To offer palliative symptom management and liaise with the division of palliative medicine when appropriate.

  • Review labs and other reports and write prescriptions.

  • Responsible for dictating and signing off on their report and discharge summaries.

  • Complete forms and necessary written referrals as needed.

  • Participate in ward collaborative care rounds.

  • Participate in the use of departmental and corporate evidence-based rules of practice to ensure that expected standards of care are achieved.

  • Participate in medical practice that is compatible with the Health Authority’s mission, values and strategic directions.

  • Other duties that may arise by circumstance and may be assigned by the Department head of Oncology and the Chief of Staff.

Note: These responsibilities are the basic and prime duties associated with your position. There may be times when the Department Head of Oncology and Chief of Staff will have you carry on responsibilities within your level of expertise outside of those listed above. Other related and allied duties may be assigned from time to time as may be necessary to the operation of Saint John Regional Hospital Oncology Service.

The GP Oncology Support physician will not take part or be responsible for the following:

  • Oncology call schedule.

  • Inpatient oncology consultations.

  • New consults.

  • Signing of chemotherapy orders.

  • Oncology treatment decisions regarding the patients’ health.

HOURS OF WORK:

  • Shifts are 7.5 hours per day, Monday through Friday to be provided between the hours of 8am-5pm.

  • Maximum time away from the clinic per year is 6 weeks (i.e. vacation and CME). Any time away requires a minimum two (2) month notice to the Chief of Oncology and the Chief of Staff.

REMUNERATION:

This is a Salaried position, remuneration is based on the New Brunswick Medical Pay Plan. The current rates range between $179,036 to a maximum of $209,846 annually (excluding benefits and source deductions) based on qualifications and experience.

On call remuneration is Fee-For-Service which is a direct compensation between the physician and Medicare New Brunswick.

SHADOW BILLING:

You will be required to provide Medicare with history-only claims (shadow-billing) electronically for all services rendered in the Oncology Outpatient clinic. You will need to request a sessional shadow-billing account with Medicare.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A medical degree is required.

  • Training and Certification as a Family Physician or equivalent from the CFPC; Experience in Oncology is desirable; CME support available.

  • Candidates must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick.

  • Member in good standing with the New Brunswick Medical Society.

  • Active membership in the Canadian Medical Protective Association or equivalent liability insurance association.

  • Verification of good standing within the Professional Association (College of Family Physicians of Canada: American Board, or equivalent specialty association).

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and team building skills.

  • Good attendance and work record.

  • Physically able to perform assigned duties.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Comply with the policies and procedures of the Department of Family Medicine and the Oncology Service.

  • Attend a minimum of one major continuing professional development event per year.

  • Comply with the provisions of the Hospital Act, the Regional Health Authorities Act, the Medical Services Payment Act and their regulations.

  • Comply with the Health Authority bylaws, rules and regulations and policies and procedures.

  • Follow the code of ethics of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick and the Canadian Medical Association.

  • Registration with New Brunswick Medicare.
