Child and Youth Psychiatrist (BH-81)

The Saint John, NB area is actively seeking a permanent, full-time salaried Child and Youth Psychiatrist.  The physician shall provide support to clients, the Child and Youth community-based teams and support to children and youth admitted to the Saint John Regional Hospital.  We work within an Integrated Service Delivery Framework in collaboration with our community partners and Government Departments (Education, Department of Social Development, and Justice and Public Safety). The successful candidate will work closely with the Area Manager to ensure quality of service delivery within a multidisciplinary team.  This would include helping to review and develop treatment protocols and programming that would best support individuals and families.

Teaching of medical students, psychiatry residents and family medicine residents is an integral part of this position as we are an Academic Department.  The successful candidate should ideally have experience teaching in an academic setting and would be required to apply for a clinical academic appointment from the Department of Psychiatry at Dalhousie University, Halifax and Memorial University, Newfoundland and Labrador as both faculties of medicine have medical learners training in Saint John.

Hours of work:

  • Hours of work are normally provided between 0830hrs – 1630hrs Monday to Friday, unless otherwise agreed upon by the Service/Department Head.
  • After-hours and weekend call coverage in coordination with members of the Department.

Job Duties:

  • These responsibilities are basic. Additional duties may be assigned from time to time

  • Ensure adequate coverage for your patients during time of absence.

  • Participating in the after-hours on-call schedule.

  • Coverage for other physicians when they are on leave or vacation.

  • Participate in medical practice that is compatible with the Health Authority’s mission, values, and strategic directions.

Remuneration:

There are two (2) remuneration models available:

Fee-for-Service: This is a direct compensation between the physician and Medicare of New Brunswick. On call remuneration is provided. No source deductions can be provided.

Salaried: Remuneration is based on the New Brunswick Medical Pay Plan. The current rates range between $241,748 to a maximum of $293,904 annually (excluding benefits and source deductions) based on qualifications and experience. On call remuneration is Fee-for-Service which is a direct compensation between the physician and Medicare New Brunswick.

Qualifications:

  • A medical degree is required.

  • Certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or American Board Certification in Psychiatry; In circumstances where no qualified Canadian trained applicants are available, equivalent certification may be considered as long as they qualify for licensure in the Province of New Brunswick. 

  • Candidates must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick.

  • Fellowship Qualifications in Child and Youth psychiatry or significant experience working in the field is required.

  • Proficiency in English is required. 

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and team-building skills.

  • Good attendance and work record.

  • Physically able to perform assigned duties.
